About the Artist

Nichole DeMent

Artist Nichole DeMent grew up in Texas and moved to Seattle in the mid 90s to study photography and art history at The Evergreen State College.  In her MadArt collaboration with Stephen Rock at McGilvra’s Restaurant, their work is an extension of many room installations they’ve created at their Pioneer Square studio, Rock|DeMent visual art space.  Colorful images of reflections on water were printed on transparent media and wrap the windows of McGilvra’s Restaurant. The colored light that shines through the clear film transcends the practice of looking at photographs, while Stephen’s vessel sculpture becomes an unexpected exploration of something at once familiar and bizarre.

Childhood memories from the 70s are captured in early photographs of Nichole: one in bell bottom jeans and another riding the family pig, Daisy Mae.  Even as a child, though, Nichole was usually behind the camera.  She is addicted to representing a side of human life, both physiologically and psychologically.  Reflections and shadows are common themes in her artwork.
