About the Artist
George Rodriguez
El Paso, Texas transplant George Rodriguez is a resident and instructor at Pottery Northwest in Seattle. George is a fan of balance and trying to get the teeter totter to line up just right ─ toggling two opposites and making the viewer decide which way to tip the board.
George, who received a BFA in ceramics from the University of Texas in El Paso, considers a toy store a sacred place for kids and this is why he created guardians for the Red Wagon entrance. The Heyday Guardians are the keepers of playfulness and fun. Objects can be transported in and out, but the purpose of the place remains the same. In a toy store, one can indulge in pleasure, but can also practice restraint.
In 2006, George was awarded the Regina Brown Undergraduate Fellowship from the National Council on the Education on Ceramic Art (NCECA). A 2009 MFA ceramics graduate from the University of Washington, George will travel through most of 2010 as a recipient of a Bonderman Travel Grant.
