The Inception of MadArt

MadArt was first conceived by Alison Milliman while living in Melbourne, Australia in 2006. In this “Down Under” environment, she experienced the joy of art in new and unexpected ways, including a lively street art scene. One source of inspiration for MadArt was found in artwork exhibited in the store windows of local merchants.

The artwork shared the primary space with everyday retail objects, creating an unexpected visual encounter. In that moment the core of the Window Art Project idea was formed. For the next three years Milliman fostered a keen desire to rethink how and where we view art in our world, exploring the idea of creating opportunities to see artwork outside familiar venues of galleries and museums. In 2009, The Window Art Project was launched in Madison Park, Seattle, Washington. Her mantra “to discover art in unexpected ways” was realized.
